I actually want to keep this one for myself but I won't. Its double crocheted with two thick yarns so its very very thick and cozy. you will not be cold in this thing. ever. both yarns are fuzzy and soft in alternating greys and the pom-pom my favourtie part is a bright mustard yello and its BIG. The hat itself is big too. Its not much wider than an average adult head but its long. This is kind of cool because you can wear it flopping down atthe back which looks really cute. If you want.. :D

In hoonor of tonights crazy harvest moon I made this colourful little hat. For an adult head and kind of boy-ish its tightly crocheted to reduce the feel of the wind and its colours are rich and vibrant. I used a couple of different kinds of yarn for this one so some rows are fuzzy and others are smooth. It has turned out pretty cool looking. Especially the top because that yarn is like a blended and wound felt with streaks of deep turquoise and teals. So nice!

This is another baby hat (3-6 months - made to order) and its made from an ultra soft acrylic yarn thats a bit special.. this yarn believe it or not is made from recycled plastic bottles. not only is it very soft and fine and baby safe but each skein saves a bunch of horrible plastic from a landfill!

This is a twin pair of adorable and cozy hats.. they go together perfectly.. they are a combination of luxurious blue/teal and shades of grey.. they even have alternating pom-poms. The yarn is acrylic and impossibly soft.. they are tightly crocheted by hand so they'll be warm in winter and of course they feature ear-flaps.. very important!
This pair would be great for twins of a couple with a sense of humour! they are adorable and luxurious.

both hats have a circumference of 19" flat and will easily fit a head of 23" (around from the back to the forehead) they are 19 inches from top of hat not including pom-pom) to the end of the strings and roughly 8" from top to bottom edge/rim.

This hat is made from thick felting yarn which is pure wool and hand dyed in beautiful soft peachy tones.. because its all wool felting yarn that means that if you wash this hat on hot with other things and then whiz nit in the dryer a few times the wool will felt together into one piece. This can look really cool but can cause shrinkage so if you want to wash it but dont want it to felt then hand wash and air-dry flat x

This is a little crocheted charm dangler made form acrylic yarn.. its a set of threads with a tiny vegetable at each end.. one has two tomatoes and one is peas in a pod and one is little carrots!
I hooked mine around the strap of my favorite canvas shopping bag.. if you don't already take your own bags to the supermarket here's an incentive!

bad-ass plants for free

Taking cutting from already established plants is a cheap and easy way to boost your garden.. A lot of plants are too weak to survive the cutting process and build their own roots.. some just dont have the genetics.. but some plants are just bad-asses.. this article is about three of the best!

English Ivy

I wanted a little ivy on my deck and I bought some small leafed american ivy but the plant took a long time to grow and is still very small... English Ivy however is a voracious climber and grows very very fast..

Here's an interesting article about how english ivy manages to climb and cover everything in its path! Sometimes this is exactly what you want but beware! According to the department of parks and recreation english ivy is a major problem which needs controling because it takes over trees and walls, keeping them well, causing them to die or degrade etc.. If you're going to grow english ivy grow it in a pot, not in the ground... And if you have some in the ground you need to control it.. It looks so nice on the trees but it's not good for them..

How to take and grow from a cutting...

With ivy's threatening nature in mind a hanging basket is a good place to plant as it trails down nicely but its roots are contained.

Taking a cutting is easy.. you just grab a pair of sharp scissors or secauteurs and trim of a healthy loking section, preferably a piece with it's own small root already.. you can soak this in water mixed with a seaweed solution specifically for this purpose but for hardy plants like english ivy, water is all you really need. put your cutting in a sunny spot and leave it. You can change the water if it gets gross but it should not take more than a week for you to see a root system developing.. then you can plant it into a wet pot of soil or even sand to get it going and it should establish itself as an independant plant in no time!

Mint

Mint is another of my favourite plants.. I love it in everything and I have been collecting different kinds.. Mint is the herb of 'hospitality' in greek mythology.. it helps to repel mosquitos..its a decongestant and it's oil can kill pests like wasps and ants.. its treats bites, its calms the stomach in tea and it's a big part of my favourite cocktails..mojitos!

growing it..

Mint prefers cool and shady and wet conditions but it can also grow in full sun.. It puts out runners and spreads quickly like a weed.. Some mint plants (like mine) are very invasive so you should plant them in a raised bed or container to stop them from covering your whole garden!

my mint story

I was given a runner of a mint plant from a clleague of my mother's in late 2008 and planted it in a 4 ft by 4 ft box in a shady patch of the garden.. the box helped retain rain water and the mint thrived for a while and then died down for the winter.. then in spring little spears began to pop up and in no time the plant was growing very fast and taking over the bow.. to keep it back i took a lot of leaves and enjoyed mojito's all summer... as winter drew in again it took all the leaves i could and i dried them out and stored them in airtight jars for mint tea in the winter.. before the first frost i took a runner from the mint and planted it in a moist pot and kept it through the winter.. it looked pretty bad for a few months but as sson as spring blossomed the mint in the box came back again and my new little potted mint plant is doing well.. you don't need to buy seeds!

So my mint is a dark litle leaved variety with jagged edges.. but while I was walking in the city past some abandoned houses recently i smelled something wonderful.. I turned around and took a second look at what appeared to be a hugely overgrown little garden outside a boarded up house. On closer inspection the sweet smelling plat that was taking over was a round and broadleafed mint! And there was so much of it about three feet high!

I tugged at one of its thick tedrils and a bough came right up.. it was a long high section of stem with huge leaves and its own seperate tiny little root from the mother plant.. I quickly took it home and deposited it in a long vase with some filtered water.. its a little tall and will need some support and the bottom 3rd of leaves taken off but I have high hopes for this latest addition to my mint garden!

(next I have my eye on pineapple mint- really smells like pineapples! chocolate mint and ginger mint- ooh!)

Nasturtiums

These plants are truly bad-ass.. the seeds are big and round so they're easy for children to plant as a project and thir shoots come up fast! there are two varieties- compact stays at around 12" high and is good for borders.. and then there's the trailing kind which is my personal favourite.. their big lily-pad leaves and vibrant flowers cascade out of window boxes and hanging baskets.

Nasturtiums are carefree and grow un-aided right until the frost comes.. and then they often come back. They are beneficial to plant and vegetables around them as insects will chew on them before other plants and the nasturtium will recover! They will cover any space that is given to them and their flowers grow out of alien-looking blossoms in bright reds, oranges and yellows.. the leaves can be used to flavotr vinegars and the blossoms are peppery in taste ad can be easten as a garnish on a summer salad!

Trivia:

Nasturtiums are form south america and were used by Peruvians

to treat all kinds of ailments and as a natural antibiotic..

In world war 2 ground nasturtium seeds were used as a pepper

replacement when there was a shortage!

Conclusion:

English Ivy, Mint and Nasturtiums are badass plants you can clip and take home for free.. just dont let them loose or they will strangle eachother!

Cotton cloths are a great alternative to paper towels and plastic based scrubbers and sponges which hold in germs and don't bio-degrade.. these are re-useable and ethical too!

Machine washable or handwash. Reshape and lay flat to dry.
